Sherwood is an italian divulgative forestry journal. The special issue dedicated to LiDAR includes an article that reports experiences of three partners of the project and the presentation of the NEWFOR project itself.

Abstract:
NEWFOR. A European project that sees LiDAR as the protagonist. Knowledge of spatial distribution of wood quantity and quality in a region along with information on forest accessibility and road network is a fundamental component for sustainable and efficient utilization of forest resources. In the Alpine region the role of accessibility analysis of forest areas is extremely important. Classic remote sensing techniques alone provide only part of the information which is necessary for a correct management of the resource. Laser scanning techniques provide added value by providing data which can be used to estimate volume, structure and accessibility. The objective of project NEWFOR (NEW technologies for a better mountain FORest timber mobilization) is to use laser scanning technology as support to forest management and harvesting for a more efficient and sustainable use of forest resources.
